How To Setup A PowerPivot Gallery the Right Way

The Almighty PowerPivot Gallery

Create the BI Center. OOTB. Easy. It will create a PP Gallery for you as well which will work 50% of the time. The other 50% is most likely 49% permission issues and 1%Database issues.

But what if you want a PP Gallery somewhere other than in the BI Center? Especially since the OOTB BI Center is geared towards PerfomancePointServices and Dashboard  Designer. Ewwww......

If you added PowerPivot for SharePoint to an existing farm or if you want an additional library, you can create a new Gallery in just about any Site or SubSite and here's how...
  1. Click Site Actions at the top left corner of your site's home page.
  2. Click More Options
  3. Under Libraries, click PowerPivot Gallery.
  4. Type a name for the library. Be sure to include descriptive information that helps users identify this library as rich preview for PowerPivot workbooks and Reporting Services reports.
  5. Click Create.

    Lets stop here for a minute. This last step is crucial to the success of your Gallery.

  6. Assuming you are a Farm admin, add the new PowerPivot Gallery as a trusted location for Excel Services. This step is necessary to avoid errors if a user configures a workbook for PowerPivot data refresh and why would you bother with any of this if data refresh wasn't needed?!
